What is a mezzotint print?
Printing mezzotints began in the 17th century, flourished in the 18th & 19th century, and today the intriguing process is almost a lost art. Mezzotint is a distinctive intaglio printmaking process different from other techniques because the artist works from dark to light rather than the more common light to dark. It is the gradations of light and dark, rather than lines, that forms the image. The resulting subtle tonalities can evoke the mystery of the universe or define the details of every day objects.
