An instructor at ODU, Saari is one of the region’s most important and recognized printmakers. In March 2020, she travelled to Antiga to move her daughter home from medical school; however, she remained unable to leave the island for nearly 90 days after it closed its borders due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Amidst food shortages and electrical outages, Saari drew and created woodcuts of Antigan women carrying food, bags, children and animals. She saw this as a metaphor for women carrying the weight of the world.
The Wehrle Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free. The gallery is located on ODU’s campus at 1216 Sunbury Road, Columbus, 43219.
