25 Prints Celebrating 25 Years: A Reunion Celebration!
It is a celebration!
On display through February 28, 2023
Please join in the Reunion of many current and past core members of the Cooperative on Saturday, February 4th from 2:00 to 5:00 at the Marcia Evans Gallery!
The Marcia Evans Gallery is pleased to be part of the ongoing 25th Anniversary celebration of the Phoenix Rising Printmaking Cooperative, established in 1998. This exhibit of past and present members exemplifies the cooperative’s commitment to preserving the fine art of printmaking and providing a studio for emerging and established artists to practice a diverse range of techniques. Woodcuts, etchings, collagraphs, embossing, monoprints, silkscreen and other innovative printmaking techniques will be included in this celebratory exhibition.
We will let you in on a secret! There are actually MORE than 25 prints in this exhibition!
Over the last 25 years Phoenix Rising has served over 95 artist members, offered over 500 public events and workshops. We continue to evolve as a community, again experiencing rebirth after the challenges of the Coronavirus. Our community of artists consistently exhibit their work publicly, win award and grant funding, teach printmaking at every level throughout the city, and give back through community events and special projects. In 2023, we will be presenting group exhibitions at Otterbein University and preparing for a group exhibition at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center. In the studio, we continue to implement increasingly environmentally friendly practices and will offer over 30 workshops and public events this year.

The story behind the name Phoenix Rising!
In 1996, artists Anne Cushman and Claire Hagan-Bauza identified a need for an independent printmaking studio in Columbus, Ohio. To create a studio facility, they began renovating a building built in 1904 on the south side of Columbus. Before they could complete the project a deliberately-set fire broke out in the building. After completing the repairs and renovations, they took inspiration from the fire and gave themselves the name Phoenix Rising Printmaking Cooperative, because they had built up their new space, literally, from the ashes. Like the mythical bird from which its name is derived, Phoenix Rising Printmaking Cooperative has enjoyed a long life: 2023 marks their 25th year as a local arts organization.
