Memories of the Farm

In a new Solo Exhibition, Memories of the Farm, by Board Member Rod Bouc’s paintings and charcoal and pastel drawings use clouds, landscape, and still life as departure points.

An intimate knowledge of the Midwest, influences from the philosophy of the Regionalists and the techniques of the New York School, combine to slowly move my work to a representational depiction of land and sky, incorporating much of the mark making, treatment of materials, and composition of my abstract days. In this way I achieve a new synthesis in my work of representation and the vigor of mark making.

Weeds, unimproved roads, unruly fields, and flowers are the subjects of my work. Light, visual texture, and complexity create images where abstraction vies with representation, yet I always strive to give the viewer a sense of place. The illusionistic push and pull of space and mark making can ride the edge of abstraction, like the sharp edges of corn leaves as they slice across your arms and face as you walk down the rows. The process of painting, alternating with drawing, is the way I capture images from nature, recharge my batteries, defragment my mind, and find a sense of accomplishment and pride.

About the Artist

Rod Bouc was raised on a farm in Nebraska. He earned a BFA from the University of Nebraska and an MFA from The Ohio State University. For over thirty years, he served as a registrar and as an administrator of the Columbus Museum of Art. He is also on the board of the Phoenix Rising Printmaking Cooperative in Columbus, Ohio.
