Biography
Alana Hiser is a printmaker and multimedia artist opposing misogynistic imagery and language with an aggressive feminine perspective. Using juxtaposing humor and traditionally feminine modes of making to evict feelings of powerlessness. By manipulating and stabbing recycled fibers to spell out the demeaning phrase of “Goddamn bitch”, I ask the audience to find humor in the insult by playfully contrasting the phrase with soft textures, candy-like colors and childlike symbols. I alter a showerhead to take on the qualities of a vagina or dildo, allowing the viewer to identify the relationship between showerheads and pleasure through its transformation into a sex toy. Playfully contrasting feelings of objectification with humor and personal narrative.
Alana Hiser recently completed her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts at the Columbus College of Art and Design, where she was awarded CCAD’s Discovery District Scholarship and the Anne Hughes Allen Scholarship.
Her work has been featured in Gladbach, Germany’s “Open Press Collection”, in Iowa’s Gallery 181 “Rise” an international exhibit and in numerous of CCAD’s “Chroma: The Best of CCAD”.
